Straight from the Field: Soka Men’s Soccer Game Recap

On a muggy, Saturday afternoon, we kicked off our second match against Multnomah University.  Brimming with confidence after our win against San Diego Christian, we came storming out of the gates. It didn’t take long before we had opened our account. Hunter Stewart played a chipped pass behind the defense to Gerardo De La Torre who dinked a shot over the onrushing keeper. We quickly added to our tally, and after 20 minutes, the scoreboard read Soka 4, Multnomah 0.  Freshman Jesus Cabrera scored his first goal for Soka University. At this point in the match, we had been stringing together several strategized sequences with ease. Hunter Stewart even attempted a volley which whistled just wide of the post. As the first half progressed and subs entered the field, we continued to pass and move with verve. Towards the end of the half, we scored two additional goals in rapid succession. Glen McKay left the keeper rooted to his spot when his well-executed shot flew into the top left-hand corner while Yauri De Groot bundled our sixth goal over the line. We went into the break with a commanding 6 to 0 lead over Multnomah.

Following the intermission, we took our foot off the gas pedal. Passes and runs weren’t made with the same urgency. Shots were wide off the mark. At around the 20-minute mark, Gerardo De La Torre skipped past a couple of Multnomah defenders before powering a low shot beyond their keeper. That goal reinvigorated us, and we began sending waves and waves of attacks at the Multnomah backline. Yauri De Groot proved to be a constant menace throughout the game. He played several balls behind the Multnomah backline before later taking matters into his own hands and scoring another goal. JC Sitchon also bagged a nice brace of his own. At the conclusion of the game, we had walked away with an impressive 12-0 win over a team that had beaten us the previous year. Onto Occidental!
